Dr Gavin Tunnard FRCEM

UK Clinical Negligence and Medicolegal Expert

Dr Tunnard is a full-time, substantive Consultant in Emergency Medicine with NHS Grampian, Scotland, maintaining active frontline clinical practice. He also practises as a Consultant in Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine with the Emergency Medical Retrieval Service, part of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

He provides independent expert opinion in clinical negligence and personal injury claims across the UK, accepting instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors.

​

Prior to his current post, he was a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust and a Major Trauma Consultant at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, giving him experience across major trauma centre and district general hospital practice within different UK healthcare systems.

Dr Tunnard is an examiner for the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and a regular faculty member on Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) courses nationally. He holds national undergraduate and postgraduate teaching roles and is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen Medical School.

He graduated from medical school in 2006, completed Foundation training in 2008, and undertook higher specialist training in Emergency Medicine in both the UK and Australia. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (FRCEM) in 2015 and has practised continuously as a full-time Consultant since that time.

Dr Tunnard has undertaken formal medico-legal training and is fully compliant with CPR Part 35 and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges guidance for expert witnesses, maintaining regular CPD in medico-legal practice. He is also instructed as an independent expert in Emergency Medicine for the General Medical Council, providing expert opinion in Fitness to Practise proceedings.

His medico-legal work includes approximately 100 personal injury reports and 8–10 clinical negligence cases per year across England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. He has experience addressing breach of duty and causation in adult and paediatric Emergency Department care, including cases involving delayed diagnosis, sepsis, acute cardiac presentations, stroke, major trauma, head injury, cauda equina syndrome, mental health presentations and pre-hospital care.

 

Dr Tunnard is a regular national speaker on emergency medicine negligence and medico-legal standards for the legal profession and welcomes enquiries for expert instruction nationwide.
